The fine art of punishment™ • The Barnes Collection and the Youth Study Center

The Barnes Foundation collection at the ArtJail.

The Barnes Foundation is home to one of the world's largest and most valuable collections of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and early Modern paintings, with extensive holdings by Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne, Renoir and Modigliani, as well as important examples of African sculpture. The mission of the Foundation is primarily educational, with a special emphasis on the enrichment of the lives of lower-income and African-American people.
The Barnes Collection at the ArtJail is Not Your Average Museum™. We've tried to remain true to the Barnes Philosophy as we've updated the curatorial vision of the Foundation. We believe that art, and we're talking about art in the broadest sense, from the high to the low, can be a great tool for education and personal enrichment. And speaking of personal enrichment, don't forget to try out the ArtSlots when you visit the collection!

Be silent, consume, die.
Dr. Barnes' famous "groupings" updated for the 21st Century.
Dr. Barnes' famous "groupings" updated for the 21st Century.
Old Dr. Barnes himself said it best, talking about his innovative wall groupings "I have introduced a new element in the gallery which decreases the width of the gap between 'fine art' and 'industrial art'...". All of Barnes' original groupings have been faithfully recreated in the ArtJail galleries, but when it came time to design the galleries for all of the artworks in the storage rooms of the Barnes Collection we had to ask "How would the Doctor have done this?". The new groupings at the ArtJail capture the spirit of the originals while offering visitors an opportunity to appreciate the finest in contemporary industrial design, with the option to buy! The ArtJails's self-guided tours are provided using our unique iDocent player which offers visitors a portable electronic guided tour of the collections (earbuds included, or use your own) AND a touchscreen shopping interface: when one of the objects in our curated collection of plasma screen displays, sneakers, portable media players, gaming systems, PDAs, skateboards and more strikes your fancy just point the iDocent at the object and follow the instructions on the touch screen to add the item to your virtual shopping cart.

ArtSlots at the ArtJail

Everybody loves to gamble! In fact, it's the basis for our whole economy (the stock maket and the world of finance) and increasingly an important source of income for state and local governments as the wealthy pay less and less taxes on their burgeoning incomes. ArtSlots at the ArtJail brings an important educational component to the world of the "one armed bandit", but don't let that discourage you - it still has all the casino thrills you can handle! Our video slots parlors are fully integrated into our gallery spaces so visitors who come to gamble are exposed to our incredible art collection, and all of the slots feature artwork from the Barnes Collection so you'll be learning about art - and life - while you play!
